Drug & Alcohol Insights: Education That Extends Beyond the Workplace

Substance use continues to impact workplace safety, productivity, and claim outcomes, often in ways employers don’t recognize until after an incident occurs. As drug trends evolve, staying informed requires more than policies alone. It requires practical, experience-based education that helps leaders recognize risks early and respond appropriately.

To support that need, Sheakley is launching a Drug & Alcohol Educational Webinar Series designed to provide employers, supervisors, and individuals with a deeper understanding of today’s substance use landscape and how it affects both work environments and everyday life.

A Real-World Perspective on a Complex Issue

This series is led by Shawn Bain, a nationally recognized instructor with more than 35 years of experience in the drug abuse domain and over three decades in law enforcement.

Shawn retired after 33 years with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, where he served in roles spanning patrol, narcotics, SWAT, and special investigations. He also led the Franklin County HIDTA Drug Task Force as Commander. His firsthand experience offers a unique, behind-the-scenes look at how substance use develops, how it impacts individuals and organizations, and why early awareness matters.

Participants can expect practical insights grounded in real-world scenarios, not just theory, making the content immediately applicable.

Starting with Today’s Drug Climate

The series begins with a foundational session:

Current Drug Climate: What Today’s Employers Are Up Against

This session explores the realities of today’s drug landscape, including emerging trends, shifting patterns of use, and the challenges employers face in maintaining safe and productive workplaces. It sets the stage for future topics by helping organizations better understand the risks they may not yet see.

Upcoming Topics in the Series

Future webinars will continue to build on this foundation, covering key areas such as:

  • Marijuana in the Workplace: What Employers Need to Know
  • Recognizing the Signs: Awareness That Protects at Work and at Home
  • Mental Health & Substance Use: Understanding the Connection

Each topic is designed to be practical, relevant, and easy to apply, whether managing a workforce or supporting those around you.

Why This Education Matters

Substance use is not limited to the workplace, and neither is the value of understanding it.

The insights shared in this series are intended to help participants:

  • Recognize early warning signs
  • Understand how substance use can impact behavior and decision-making
  • Approach situations with greater awareness and confidence
  • Apply what they learn not only professionally, but personally

Whether interacting with employees, coworkers, family members, or friends, this knowledge provides tools that extend well beyond day-to-day responsibilities on the job.
